What is Harm Reduction
Harm Reduction seeks to use practical strategies to reduce harm. Harm Reduction is used in lots of different ways in our society, from buckling our seatbelts, to using condoms during sex, to providing overdose prevention, harm reduction seeks to have better health outcomes for everyone.
From the National Harm Reduction Coalition, Harm Reduction is explained as, “Harm reduction is a set of practical strategies and ideas aimed at reducing negative consequences associated with drug use. Harm Reduction is also a movement for social justice built on a belief in, and respect for, the rights of people who use drugs.”
At The Empowerment Program, we focus on meeting people where they’re at, and encouraging realistic options for reducing harm in sexual activity and drug usage. We employ a large variety of harm reduction techniques and are excited to help our neighbors in the Denver Metro empower themselves with what works for them!
Available Harm Reduction Items
Narcan
Narcan is the brand name of a medication called Naloxone. It is used to stop a person from dying during an opioid overdose.
At The Empowerment Program, we carry the nasal spray Narcan. This is dispensed easily into the nostrils.
Sharps Drop-Off
Sharps Drop is for disposing of needles or sharp biohazardous material. The drop is located on the East Side of our building at 1600 York Street in Denver. Anyone can drop their sharps here any time of the day!
Fentanyl Testing Strips
Fentanyl is a highly potent form of synthetic opioid. It has been found in in Denver's and the surrounding metro area's drug supply. No one should have to die from a drug overdose that is preventable. Knowing what is in your substances is vital.
Safer Injection Kit
This Kit provides non contaminated material to use injectable drugs with decreased risk of bloodborne pathogen transmission.
The kit includes cotton pellets, cooker, sterilization wipe, and floral wire (to create a handle for the cooker).
Safer Smoking Kit
This Kit provides non contaminated material to use smokable drugs with decreased risk of bloodborne pathogen transmission.
This kit includes a pipe end, sterilization wipe, petroleum jelly, screens, and a push stick.
Safer Snorting Kit
This Kit provides non contaminated material to use snortable drugs with decreased risk of bloodborne pathogen transmission. The kit includes a laminated surface, spoon, straws, saline, razor blade, and petroleum jelly.

Dental Dams
Dental Dams are use for oral sex to provide a barrier between the two individuals.
